How to Decorate with Art | 4 Things to Consider

Buying and decorating with art for your home can be overwhelming and frustrating if you are not sure where to start. Here, I am sharing a few tips that I have learned as an artist and someone who loves having original art in my home. Consider this as a place to start and become more comfortable with making a selection.

Artwork: Change of Season & Walking Through Sunshine

My Tips:

1. Make it personal. Connect with the art on some level. It could be the colors that speak to you. Maybe the art invokes a memory or refers to a place, person or thing that you connect with. How does the artwork make you feel?

2. Space is important. Always measure before you start looking. A large painting could be overwhelming to a space you thought it would fit.  Also a small painting might look lost on a bigger wall. Small paintings can be great for a gallery wall. They can also be fun for small places you didn’t think about before.

3. Use a color scheme for the room. Consider what colors are already in the room. You can choose art with similar color/s or colors that compliment each other. Think back to your art class and when you (hopefully) learned about the color wheel. Opposite colors compliment each other. One example of complimentary colors (which I seem to use often) is blue and orange.

4. Research. Look at art in galleries and online. Find what style you love.

Bonus tip: This may seem obvious, but always consider your budget when selecting art. Art can be an investment with both money and how long you plan to live with the art. But, I think, buy what you love.

Happy collecting!!
